Cuba is a sporting nation whose achievements far surpass what one would expect based on the size of Cuba and its economy. Cuba has for years competed in several sports at the top international level and often dominated or at least brought home a few medals. The secret of Cuba’s success must be partly attributed to the socialist government of Cuba who have invested heavily in the promotion of sports in Cuba. Today, millions of young people in Cuba actively participate in amateur sports which means when it comes to selecting for the national sports teams, the sports officials in Cuba have a wider pool from which to choose. The 2011 Baseball World Cup is an international baseball tournament held from October 1 to October 15, 2011. It is the 39th Baseball World Cup. The International Baseball Federation selected Panama to host the tournament, turning down bids from Chinese Taipei and Venezuela.
